Causes of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a skin pigmentation disorder that produces white patches on skin. This is a skin disorder that does not cause any physical harm to the body and is not contagious. Vitiligo only causes cosmetic defect i.e. de-pigmentation.

Numerous confusions exist about the causes of vitiligo. Scientists and researchers have put forward some theories about the causes of vitiligo but the exact cause is still unknown. One of these theories says that people with vitiligo starts developing antibodies which initiates the destruction melanocytes (pigment producing cells). But nobody is sure that whether development of antibodies is the cause or result of vitiligo.

Another theory about the cause of vitiligo says that it is a genetic disorder. Researchers have found out that this disease is more common among the blood relatives. Inheritance is considered to be the most accurate cause of vitiligo. Some people with vitiligo have also held responsible the factors like severe physical or psychological illness for vitiligo.

Some of the researchers have also tried to reveal relationships between vitiligo and other autoimmune diseases like thyroid disease, but also pernicious anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, Addison’s disease, and adult-onset autoimmune diabetes.

Vitiligo is believed to exist from ages but nobody has been able to discover its exact cause and its permanent cure.
